What Is a Deep Writing Intensive?
A Deep Writing Intensive is an intensive, highly stimulating, two-week group writing experience designed to tease out and write your most evocative personal stories.
During a Deep Writing Intensive, we gather inside a private group space and write together ten pieces on a specific theme. Something creatively magical happens when you write about the same theme and read what others write alongside you ten days in a row (with a weekend breather midway). The chemistry, interaction, sharing, and connection among the members during each of these events are unmatched.
The event is time-zone friendly, and it’s designed to let the participants write and share on their own clock.
“This group is unlike anything I have experienced. It has unleashed many words that needed a meadow to romp in without fear. Think about it.”
~ TERRI JACKSON, Writer and Photographer
What Makes These Writing Groups Different?
A Deep Writing Intensive is focused…
We concentrate on exploring one intriguing theme for in each event and tease out our juiciest stories by exploring the different facets of a rich topic. You get creatively inspired by diving into rich metaphors and archetypes. The participants create a series of unique pieces of writing that can either stand alone or form the basis of a longer piece.
“I wake up in the middle of the night, and I check my phone for new writings. I wake up in the morning and read more pieces over my breakfast. I love each and every single contribution I’ve read. I want more. I check my phone through the day, not wanting to miss a word. And the stories that haven’t been shared yet, or written yet, I so hope they see the light of day here…because we are ourselves here, we are our authentic selves.”
~ SUE SHOBERT JORGENSON, Spiritual Guide, Healer, and Writer
A Deep Writing Intensive is short and sweet…
Each event lasts only two weeks. There’s no overwhelm or an ongoing commitment to a community. But in spite of the relatively short duration of the gathering, the writing is intense, and the connection is transforming. The whole experience is rewarding on so many different levels.
“Writing. Stamina. I love this experience. Our writing is becoming a string of stories that paint a much larger picture. The words are flowing and they just won’t stop. Maybe I ‘will’ write that book some day.”
~ SUE ANN GLEASON, Writer, Holistic Health Specialist, and Nourishment Guide
A Deep Writing Intensive is bountiful…
We get to create ten short pieces during each event. You unearth and develop at least few beautiful stories you can use in future work. The essays some of the participants wrote during previous deep writing intensives were accepted by various respected publications. Other participants used their pieces as the seeds for a memoir they’re writing or shared them with their readers and received much praise.
“This intensive is a great way of gathering content for a memoir. I am going to miss this group. What a wonderful experience and a fantastic collection of writers and writing! This feels like the most sacred writing space.”
~ JACKEE HOLDER, Writer and Journaling Instructor
A Deep Writing Intensive is connecting…
These events bring together writers and creatives from a wide variety of backgrounds. Each gathering gives us the opportunity to witness and access writing that is both fresh and seasoned. Writing is a solitary experience. But here, it becomes a communal one. We inspire, encourage, and champion each other. We pull each other higher. It’s magical.
“Can I just say how much I am loving this group? It has come along at a time when I should have said no to adding one more thing to my overflowing plate, but I am so, so grateful I said yes. I needed this. And I am more grateful for the honesty, courage, openness and acceptance of everyone here. And wow—the writing is impressive and inspiring. Thank you.”
~ DAWN COLANGELO LEAS, Poet and Writer
A Deep Writing Intensive is liberating…
We cultivate creativity and meaning through the places we find within ourselves as we dig into each gripping writing topic. The stories we allow ourselves to write are stunning. The conversations we have as we deepen our relationship with fellow creatives who equally value writing and storytelling are rich and fulfilling.
“I can’t say enough about the wonderful writing here, but I’d like take just one minute to add: I’ve put myself out there in a few of my pieces here, revealing pieces of me that are less than flattering… and I am deeply moved by the support and encouragement in this group. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for creating and maintaining this environment.”
~ MARGARET KEEN KEATING, Poet and Executive Assistant/Associate Director Of Volunteerism
A Deep Writing Intensive is creatively empowering…
Each intensive is a hands-on experience, designed to get you to deepen your writing practice and strengthen your writing muscle. You don’t learn from the masters; you move your pen, find your voice, expand as a writer, and become your own master. Once you’re in, you’re free to find your zone, take initiative, and be on the driver’s seat of your writing.
“I am not a writer, I don’t consider myself one. Not to mention that walls of texts make me dizzy. But Cigdem’s writing intensives completely changed my relationship with writing. For the first time in my life, I wrote with company. Some writers were beginners, like me, some well into their game. The ‘together’ aspect was a very different experience than a class. There were no lessons in this intensive, only prompts that made the stories race on the page. It was amazing to see how connections were made based on each other’s writing. Telling the truth with bravery became a ping pong-we each helped each other dare more, reveal more, and be alive more. Writing as a group was an experience part writing, part healing, and part party. I am confident about my voice now when it comes to personal storytelling. I am not afraid of writing anymore, and I even enjoy it. I am able to tackle larger pieces with a more critical eye, and I have become a better editor. Not only that, I also decided that a memoir is in order soon, something that never crossed my mind before, ever.”
~ MONICKA CLIO SAKKI, Artist, Writer, and Creativity Mentor
How Does It Work & What Is Included?
Each month’s writing intensive begins on the last Monday of each month with a brand new writing theme. The daily writing material is emailed every morning and also posted in our group space where members are invited to share their own writing in response to the daily prompts.
“These essays and prompts have taken me so much deeper than I foresaw, much is churning within, and it is timely. I have been writing privately and hope to have time to share here—there is much to be gained by sharing.”
~ MARY McCONNELL, Well-Being Therapist
Here is what you get during a Deep Writing Intensive:

- A unique writing prompt crafted to complement each essay—to awaken your creative muse and tease out your most essential stories on the writing theme.
- Two weeks of wonderful writing, reading, storytelling, and connecting inside a cozy, friendly group—a private writing salon where you can connect with fellow writers, share your writing, and enjoy what your confidantes write and share.
- A beautifully designed, downloadable ebook of the complete class material delivered to your inbox at the end of the program in the form of a single downloadable file.
This spirited creative immersion is rich enough to inspire your muse and get you to write some of your best stories and short enough to preclude overwhelm. Who Is Your Facilitator?
CIGDEM KOBU is a storyteller, wordsmith, award-winning literary translator, creative entrepreneur, INFP, Peet’s coffee addict, and Oma to Noah. She is also the founder of The Inky Path and The Inky Path Women Writers’ Collective, where she helps unshakable women writers change their world with their words. Cigdem has been running writing and journaling programs for creative women since 2012. She has heard that her participants come to write together once and then stay for the community and deep connections.
“The intensives provide a huge opening to explore and navigate my own thoughts and then create from them. Cigdem’s stories never fail to start a little tornado, a good tornado, of muses and reflections, forming the words that eventually get put down. At times I write off the top of my head, unedited, and other times, it takes some thought and framing before I write. I love it all and that it happens in community rather than solitary space makes it all the richer an experience.”
~ DAWN SULLY PILE, Co-Active Coach, Speaker, and Seminal Leader
“The most powerful part of the intensive came as a surprise. As I engaged with a commitment to write from a place of truth and honesty, I made a pact with myself that I would attempt to write each day, for and from my own experience, not from the stories that have always been told. The unexpected happened. I was broken open, raw and exposed. I found a welcoming, encouraging, trustworthy and engaged tribe. I don’t consider myself a writer but I do have a story to tell. This writing intensive has been a nudge to venture into an unknown place. Writing has clarified some of the conflicted feelings I have with myself. Deep, deep gratitude for you. For holding my stories, my writing, for holding me with such grace.”
~ ANNE LARSON BUCK, Artist and Writer

Q: How will I receive the writing material?
The daily material will be emailed to you each morning at 5 am EST during the last week of each month. I’ll also post the material every day on our group wall, so there’s no way you’ll miss it!
Q: Where will I meet the other participants?
We write together in our private Facebook group.
Q: Will what I share be protected?
Yes. Anything you post in the group will be protected because we’re in a private Facebook group. Only your writing companions in the same group will be able to read what you share.
Q: Do I have to actively participate in the intensive? Can I do some (or all) of the writing on my own?
If you’d prefer to take the class material and write your stories on your own without sharing, you may do that and skip the group experience. There are no obligations; only an invitation to sit in a circle and share the joy of writing and reading.
Q: What if I feel overwhelmed?
The Inky Path Deep Writing Intensives are short, sweet, and sumptuous. They are memorable events that are deep enough for transformation and short enough to preclude overwhelm or boredom. Each group starts on a Monday. We have ten writing days. After the first five days, we have the weekend as a breather and also to catch up. After the weekend, we continue to write, share, connect, and catch up. Even after the first few days, you’ll be amazed by what you write and what you read.
“Taking the time to read, reflect and write on a personal level, yet being a part of a larger group of women has been amazing! The topics and questions are great as always!”
~ CHERYL FORTIER, Artist
Q: What will I write during the intensives?
Most members write personal essays, some of which turn into pieces that can lead to a memoir. There are also participants who write poems, especially narrative poems. The writing material is designed to summon stories for nonfiction pieces, but you can also use them to write in any other genre. In fact, this is the perfect setting for experimenting with different genres.
Q: What will I be able to do with what I write?
Some of the participants turn their pieces into narrative essays they submit to various online and print publications. Some of them use them in longer work such as an upcoming memoir. Others publish them on their own blogs. And some of us write them only for ourselves without any publishing goal. The pieces that come out of these intensive are rich and vivid. But it’s totally up to you how to use them. If you contact me after the event, I’d be absolutely happy to brainstorm with you.
“I feel inspired and touched by so many beautiful stories shared in this space.”
~ TANYA SLAVIN, Writer and Essayist

“Being part of The Inky Path is just filling and emptying me simultaneously. I’ve never found such an accepting space to write truth in. Me and I had a morning blether—me said ‘this is unlike anything I’ve ever done’ and I replied ‘it’s by far the best thing you’ve ever done.’ I’ve been telling everyone just how amazing and wonderful and inspiring and gutting and everything this is. I’ve never written such raw and open stories before. Thank you for such a trusting place to explore.”
